We'd like to have a look at ranking some of the greatest shots in the history of the Open for Shot Quality. Here are a few suggestions of my own to kick things off...

Seve Ballesteros' putt on the 18th green at St Andrews in '84.
Ben Hogan's drives on the 6th at Carnoustie in '53 (anyone who has played there will confirm how daunting that line is)
Rocca's putt at St Andrews

For me, the greatest I've seen is probably Padraig's 5 wood at Birkdale, 278 yards to 3 ft in a howling wind on the 71st hole!!!

In terms of my favourite, Spieth's "Go get that!" putt has to be up there. What a gloriously ridiculous moment!

Seve's chip between the bunkers in the '76 Open was incredible (as @olly.huggy35 will testify - also makes me very jealous!)
Jack's 2nd shot into the final green from a gorse bush in the '77 Open at Turnberry
Justin Rose probably deserves a mention for his pitch-in to finish 3rd as a 12 year old in the '98 Open at Birkdale

Pretty punchy 6i from 201 into 14 at birkdale from spieth missing by an inch. Most people after going full chop down 13 would've lost their heads. Can only believe that making birdie straight after, regained his composure to then lead to the "go get that" moment and the birdies that followed

@tanton8 @hugh.marr Not sure I can remember seeing a more remarkable set of holes than Spieth from the 13th tee to the 18th green. Was just amazing theatre!

Talking of shotmaking, you could pick a whole number from Seve v Nick Price on the last day in ‘88. Seve put it to a matter of inches on 15, I think it was, which turned the tide. And the Stenson-Mickelson duel at Troon was so good it surely merits its own ‘Duel in the sun’ like name. @Piers and @ed, I’m expecting you to weigh in here with some good ones

Not a single shot per se, but Tiger navigating four rounds at St Andrews without hitting it in a single bunker is obscene.

@tomwrighttt7 Faldo only went in one, I think, in 1990. Got to be a big part of strategy

Having had the good fortune to have coached Seve on Tour I asked him about that putt on the 18th at St Andrew’s. He told me “Ian I didn’t hit the putt very well, not how I wanted but you know, I was never going to miss that putt, I willed it in.”

Several times I was with Seve and he displayed guts, courage, belief and a burning desire within that no other Tour player I have coached has displayed.

Many more examples I could easily cite but Seve said to me his shot out of the bunker at the 1983 Ryder Cup in West Palm Beach was probably his best. I asked Paul Way, who I also coached on Tour, and who partnered Seve that week, and Paul told me the same. Jack Nicklaus said it was the greatest golf shot he had ever seen. Some praise indeed.
