Shot Quality: now factoring weather conditions
We are now implementing the weather model we have been testing. When you add weather conditions using the ‘Edit Activity’ feature, we now adjust each and every shot based on the conditions for the day. This adds further context to your Average Shot Quality for each round, enabling you to better compare performance across different courses and/or different conditions.
For now, we use a combination of wind and rain. Soon we will automatically be adding temperature, too. The model uses this simple matrix for now, which covers four broad types of weather conditions:
Clippd adjusts each shot in the round with Approach play scoring generally being affected the most.
The impact of this can be seen below for the same round of golf before and after the weather model was applied. Note: this round was played in very high winds and was therefore classed as ‘Miserable’.
As you can see, the Strokes Gained numbers do not change, whereas Shot Quality does. This means we are able to more accurately determine the quality of your play in different conditions — something every golfer will appreciate.
Currently, we only support the addition of weather data for rounds entered using Arccos and GolfStatLab (GSL), but we will be looking to add this feature to our manual load data sources soon.
Player Quality: Tournament v Practice
Course Difficulty and Weather are important layers of context that make Shot Quality more precise than Strokes Gained. We have gone a step further by giving Tournament rounds a higher priority in the calculation of Player Quality. We encourage all Clippd users to input their practice data (both practice rounds and practice sessions) because it helps to shape Clippd’s understanding of you as a golfer.
Clippd Capture App: new practice tests
We have added two new tests to our Clippd Capture App:- Putting Combine: play 9 or 18 holes across various slopes and distances, recording the outcome.
- Around the Green: a generic drill that lets you set the number of shots, the types of lie and the clubs used with an aim of getting the ball inside 6 feet
Like all tests in the Clippd Capture App, the results automatically feed through to Clippd and will appear on your ‘My Activities’ feed. As the tests have a measurable outcome, we can calculate a Shot Quality and hence feed the results into your overall Player Quality calculations.
We have also added a ‘Test Info’ box on the ‘My Activities’ feed, which reminds you of the scoring system for each test.
Other improvements
- GSL miss-direction is now being accounted for, which means shot distance is being more accurately calculated.
- Trackman Tests/Combines done in metres are now better reflected in ‘Activities’ in Clippd
- Penalties are excluded from OTT Scoring chart on the drilldown
- The new + icon on the navbar makes it easier to launch the Clippd Capture App
- We have a revised form for off-course activities enabling quicker creation
