@derekhoopergolf thanks for getting involved Derek, I agree and disagree with elements of your argument. Yes, I 100% believe the data that is deemed “important” has been largely driven by tech companies. You just need to look at how “smash factor” has consumed the industry for evidence of that. I disagree that coaches need to be presented with a hierarchy of data to be effective. It’s our job as an community to do that! Each and every player (and coach) will require a different hierarchy, we as coaches need to be aware of that and develop the ability to analyse the data to be able to deliver that.
Are players and coaches getting the most out of golf data?

@hugh.marr I agree with your point that every Coach needs to develop their own hierarchy of data, and not be forced to follow one set model. I could have written that better in my post. Would you think it could be helpful if more experienced Coaches shared how they do that with their players so that less experienced Coaches can start to develop their own models?Derek Hooper, PGA

@derekhoopergolf absolutely I think it would be helpful! I don’t understand why experienced coaches don’t share more about their process or system.

Wanted to bring this post from @motleygolf to your attention. While it extends this conversation, we advised Tom to post it on the Community board so the players in the network can read and contribute.
"Stats are about creating a conversation with the player. That's what coaching is"
"As a coach who takes great interest in statistics and data, I ask all my elite players to keep track of their numbers in some form or another. Recently, I was asked: “Why is data so important?”
For me, this is an easy answer: as a coach, data gives me a much clearer insight into a player’s game, both strengths and weaknesses. That much is obvious. But there is a lot more to it than just looking and picking out numbers that are good and bad.
Statistics and data don’t tell you the whole story, only some of it. The gold within the analysis is not the data itself but the conversations that come from it! There are often more questions than answers and this is where my role as a coach really adds value to helping those players lower their scores." Read the post in full

Hi all. Wanted to reignite this conversation topic. @steve.astle922 has shared some really interesting thoughts on educating players in the value of data collection, how players train and where junior coaching can be improved. Read the full interview here. It would be great to hear your views in the comments section.
