Id be interested to here your guys thoughts on players keeping both competitive and non-competitive round stats.

I understand that for some players they see no importance to the non-competitive stats, however I think there is value in them, just interested in your guys thoughts.

Was just thinking about this further, have you historically asked your players to track all their stats? I know @brianjacobsgolf has said before "no data no lesson" (https://community.clippd.com/threads...h-Brian-Jacobs) so would be interesting to hear how he gets this across to his players!

I do ask for non-competitive as not all players play in events but still need tactical information to ladder their plans. In my way of thinking we cannot coach what we don't know. Players have skewed perceptions of how they performed for example "I drove it poorly!" may be one comment..data showed 10/14 fairways and one of the misses was OB so that is what is remembered as our brains are programmed to negativity. They actually drove the ball quite well..just one foul ball and the other 3 had good lies out of the fairway. This is how we can help with the students game on setting their programs correctly.

@motleygolf Tom, I require all my junior tournament players to keep stats. I explain that without data it's hard to know exactly what to work on. With the data, we can develop more detailed practice and instructions plans. As for non-tournament players I highly recommend they keep stats for the same reasons but don't push it as much.

There is a great deal of value in both tournament rounds stats and non tournament rounds. I like to have the ability to identify differences when they are playing for fun and what happens under the heat of competition.

Hi Brian. I'd be really interested to hear how you get that point across to you players? Is it simply saying if they'd like to be coached by you then it's a requirement or do you try to educate them on why it's important?

@chrisfoleygolf @brianjacobsgolf @motleygolf It feels like it boils down to this: if you value your practice, whether that be on-course or off-course, why wouldn't you record it? And if you don't value it enough to record it, why are you doing it in the first place? This might well be an over-simplification and I certainly do not have the perspective, experience or ability of an elite amateur or tournament pro! That said, many players have told us they approach their practice rounds differently - they might try things they wouldn't normally do in tournament conditions – but as @harvey.hillary pointed out in his article, those things that players try and pull off actually shine a light on their potential. It's the equivalent of the 'perfect lap' in F1, namely the combination of the driver's best sector times on a track. After chatting with Harvey, I keep coming back to one of the things he said: "The best possible me represents the skills I currently have. If I pull them together right now, this is what I could deliver on the course." That's surely what practice is, and why it should be recorded
